A Labour MSP is planning to replace party leader Jim Murphy, according to a former council colleague.

Alex Rowley, who worked alongside Gordon Brown for many years and is regularly cited as his protégé, has reportedly been manoeuvring himself to be in a position to challenge the leadership of his party after their catastrophic election results.

He has already resigned from the shadow cabinet, and in an open letter to Jim Murphy wrote: “I sincerely hold the view that you continuing as leader whilst not in the Scottish Parliament, and not in an elected position holding a democratic mandate, means you will become an unhelpful distraction from the real issues that Scottish Labour must focus on.”
