Gunmen in Yemen on Saturday abducted President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi’s chief of staff, shortly before he was due to present a draft of a controversial constitution which has angered the Shiite militia that controls the capital, officials said.

Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak and his companions were kidnapped early Saturday in the centre of the capital Sanaa, and driven away to an unknown location.

Shia Houthi rebels, who control much of the capital, are suspected of being behind the abduction, officials said.

Yemen has been dogged by instability since the 2012 ouster of Ali Abdullah Saleh after a bloody year-long uprising, with the Houthis and al Qaeda seeking to fill the power vacuum.

One source told Reuters that Mubarak was kidnapped by the Houthis, who have denounced leaked details of the draft, to stop him presenting the draft of the new constitution…
